Whether you embrace the sentiment of the day, or you avoid it like the plague, like most pinnacle occasions, Valentine’s day has a story behind it.

According to History.com, while some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death (or burial, which probably occurred around A.D. 270), others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to “Christianize” the pagan celebration of Lupercalia.

According to the Walks of Italy, The Strange but True Story Behind Valentine’s Day states that the Saint Valentine of Valentine’s Day was one of two individuals preaching the good word in Rome in the third century. One of these two was martyred on 14 February 269, thus giving us the date for his eponymous day.

If you would like a more visual version of the story, the video below gives a good summary. It is for children, but who cares.

So whether you are ready to feel and give the love, being careful not to bend down and tie your shoelace in Paris, chilling out with some friends, basking in anticipation at the potential reduced heart shaped chocolate on 15 February, or going full recluse until the day is over, here is some interesting information for you.
