- The ‘Fight, Flight, or Freeze’ response: When you hear a sudden loud bang or spot a spider, your amygdala instantly triggers the autonomic nervous system before your conscious brain even registers what happened. It spikes your heart rate and floods your body with adrenaline.
- Reading the room: It helps you decode facial expressions and body language. If someone gives you a tense look, your amygdala flags it as a potential social threat, prompting you to tread carefully.
- Emotional memory: The amygdala acts like a yellow highlighter for your brain. When an event carries strong emotional weight (like a wedding day or a car accident), the amygdala works with the hippocampus to cement that memory, making it much easier to recall later.
